'Avengers: Endgame': It's Epic, Surprising, Satisfying ... and Impossible to Review

While there is always somebody that doesn’t like something, and that doesn’t necessarily make them wrong, if you’re a fan even just casually invested in the last 11 years and 22 films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s hard to imagine not being impressed but more importantly utterly satisfied with Marvel Studios' epic conclusion to an era — "Avengers: Endgame."

Somehow surgically grafting way more fun and unexpectedly lighthearted moments than seemed narratively possible along with a story apparently designed to invoke tears every 10 minutes of its 3-hour runtime, Endgame is best enjoyed in its purest form …

… meaning if you’ve managed to make it to this point, avoid spoilers at all costs.

No, seriously. Stay off Twitter completely if you have to. Allow yourself the experience.

For once.

Which of course means nothing you’re going to read here is going to spoil even a little bit of what’s in store. Not even small hints and clues to impress you with our cleverness when you figure out what we meant after you see it.

We’re sending you in cold.

We’re sending you in blind.

But we’re sending you in hopefully with the confidence to put away your checklist of what you think should happen and just let what happens happen, and to let yourself gather it all in after the fact.

When is the last time you experienced a movie like that?

What we will prepare you for is this — Yes, Marvel Studios and directors Joe and Anthony Russo screwed with you again. The commercials and trailers are intentionally misleading.

But that’s cool.

And yes, the film is designed to surprise you and to confound your expectations and to lay waste to your fan theories.

And Avengers: Endgame is … in a word ... funky. Its structure will surprise you; its music choices will surprise you; and it’s not in any way a repeat of any MCU film that’s come before. It turns out that not making Endgame Infinity War Part 2 was completely justified and not just a dimestore marketing trick.

By now you’ve probably figured out we’re just stalling for time because we in fact intend to tell you nothing about Endgame.

Others certainly will, we won’t.

What we will ask you to do is to try to avoid temptation, wait out the next 48-120 hours and to watch Endgame with an open mind. We think you're going to find the experience everything you hoped it would be all these years.

But then join us back here next week when we pick apart all the juicy details…

… which is going to take some major doing.

… a lot of doing.
