NASA's New Horizons probe has lifted the veil on Pluto. On July 14, New Horizons performed the first-ever flyby of the faraway dwarf planet, zooming within 7,800 miles (12,500 kilometers) of its frigid surface. New Horizons continued beaming flyby data home for months after the the flyby, then went into a hibernation mode to conserve resources for the Jan. 1, 2019 flyby of the Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule.
